Our Story
OPENING IN MARCH 2005, STEPPING OUT BECAME THE LEADING SHOE STORE IN TOWN WITH THE ICONIC HOT PINK SHOE.
Each season, the Stepping Out team choose from over 3000 samples to have instore, eventually breaking that down into a final selection of around 250 styles. Moana, with a sample size foot, is able to ‘test drive’ each sample being considered, ensuring comfort, fit and style are all maximised!
With over 30 different shoe brands from Europe & Asia, including Rieker, Hogl, Zinda, Minx, & Django & Juliette, Stepping Out specialises in stylish comfortable footwear for all occasions.
Customer service and satisfaction is of great importance to the team at Stepping Out. They have a genuine interest in their customers and appreciate, and enjoy having the opportunity to help find what they are looking for. When footwear and accessories for a special occasion are needed, they encourage their customers to bring in their outfits so that they can work with them to complete their ensemble. Stepping Out is owned and operated by Moana and Carolyn, and supported by three part time staff, Linda, Tracey & Jennie.

Moana Taylor
I have always had a passion for shoes and as a student at Ashburton College I dreamed of owning my own shoe store. I also love to shop so selecting shoes for Stepping Out is my dream job – lots of fun and challenging as well.
I am married to Paul, an arable farmer, and we have two adult daughters, a 15 year old son, a son-in-law and 2 granddaughters. All, except our son, live in Australia so frequent trips over the ditch have become a “necessity”.
Carolyn Ewing
I grew up in Ashburton and was the only daughter in a family of four. I am married to Steve and we have two gorgeous adult children. Lucy lives in Melbourne and Mitchell lives in Ashburton and works with Steve in our building business.
Hairdressing was my chosen career, which I loved, as helping clients create their own look was important to me. I worked in a local salon for many years before working for myself as I raised my family.
Spending time with family and friends is what I enjoy doing when i’m not working. Besides business and friendship, Moana and I are also first cousins so we have quite alot in common, we both enjoy good food, wine health and fashion. I am very proud to be a Mid Canterbrian.
Matilda Mannequin
Matilda has been brightening our window since the beginning of 2013.
Our style guru, Matilda has the selection of the whole store to showcase, both footwear and accessories. She loves dressing up for different occasions, and is often complimented on her style, including the ultimate compliment when people wish to purchase her exact look. Matilda looks forward to meeting you, and helping choose your next piece of footwear or accessory.
